Prism Blade Guillotina
Selfless Lovers - A Magical Girl Zine
Once part of the Prism Blades, a team of young magical girls brought together by Kismet to fight evil, Guillotina fell through a portal at the height of the group's tragic defeat. Now trapped in our dimension -specifically, Detroit- she works two dead-end jobs just to cover the rent for a shitty apartment, bare cupboards, and an empty fridge. Chasing down her mugger at the lowest point in her life since arriving in Detroit, Guillotina reunites with Kismet, the demon who granted her her powers as a child.
With her powers restored and a new interdimensional roommate, Guillotina opens her eyes to the injustices of the modern world. From unscrupulous landlords evicting sweet old ladies on a fixed income, immigration agents harassing minorities regardless of their citizenship status, government corruption, or ultra-wealthy asshats manipulating broken systems to line their pockets, Guillotina turns her magical powers toward fighting evils far worse than any monster she fought as a child.
Guillotina is coming, evil-doers, and "Off with their heads" is her call to action!
Featuring magical girl genre tales of beat down and worn out people with magical powers, Selfless Lovers is an attempt to add something positive to our trash fire world. Fighting against social issues and other struggles we all endure by living in our modern dystopian hellscape, these girls have had enough and won't stand by doing nothing any longer. It’s not all fiction, though. Each issue also features contributors' articles, art, handy advice for civil disobedience, deep thoughts on our world, horoscopes, silly personal ads, comics, memes, poetry, and resources so you too can take action.
People need not only hope but actionable goals to achieve change. I’m not saying we should be looking to magical girl shows to fight climate change -or anyone in the entertainment industry, for that matter- but one’s soul needs nourishment if we’re going to join the fight. We need reasons to hope. We need leaders to hope for, and to lend strength to. So one of the main goals for this zine will be to shine a light on what’s going right in the fight to save the world, and to inspire a fighting spirit in our readers. We figured we might as well use a sparkling aesthetic to do it. [Currently Discontinued]
